Satellite-Based Estimation of Roughness Length over Vegetated Surfaces and Its Utilization in WRF Simulations

چکیده

Based on morphological methods, MODIS satellite remote sensing data were used to establish a dataset of the local roughness length (Z0) vegetation-covered surfaces in Guangdong Province. The Z0 was update mesoscale Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model order quantitatively evaluate its impact thermodynamic environment surfaces. specific results are as follows: evergreen broad-leaved forests showed largest average values at 1.27 m (spring), 1.15 (summer), 1.03 (autumn), (winter); mixed ranged from 0.90 1.20 m; those for cropland-covered 0.17 0.20 m. individual vegetation coverage types all exhibited relatively high spring low autumn, default corresponding significantly underestimated WRF model. Modifying underlying forests, croplands induced only small changes (<1%) their 2 temperature, relative humidity, skin surface planetary boundary layer height. However, daily wind speed covered by reduced 0.48 m/s, 0.43 0.26 respectively, accounting 12.0%, 11.1%, 6.5%, respectively.

Analysis of updraft velocity in mesoscale convective systems using satellite and WRF model simulations

Updraft vertical velocity is an important dynamical quantity which is strongly related to storm intensity and heavy precipitation. It can be calculated by direct observations, NWP model, and geostationary satellites which can provide the possibility of measuring this quantity with high temporal resolution. This research analyzed updraft velocity based on six derived parameters from INSAT3-D and...

Characterising Heterogeneous Vegetated Surfaces Using Multiangular Satellite Data

Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Functions (BRDF) seek to represent variations in surface reflectance resulting from changes in a satellite’s view and illumination angles. BRDF representations have been widely used to assist in the characterisation of vegetation. The resulting BRDF represents a spatial integral of all the individual surface features present in a pixel. To fully understand...

Toward the Estimation of Surface Soil Moisture Content Using Geostationary Satellite Data over Sparsely Vegetated Area

Based on a novel bare surface soil moisture (SSM) retrieval model developed from the synergistic use of the diurnal cycles of land surface temperature (LST) and net surface shortwave radiation (NSSR) (Leng et al. 2014. “Bare Surface Soil Moisture Retrieval from the Synergistic Use of Optical and Thermal Infrared Data”. International Journal of Remote Sensing 35: 988–1003.), this paper mainly in...

Annual Evaluation of Wrf-arw and Wrf-nmm Meteorological Simulations over Europe

The BSC-CNS is involved in the CALIOPE project (Baldasano et al., 2008), a national Spanish initiative that has as main objective to establish an air quality forecasting system for Spain coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment. The modeling system bases on the WRF-ARW model as meteorological driver (Figure 1). As is well known, air quality models are highly dependent on the quality of th...

Comparison of Thunderstorm Simulations from WRF-NMM and WRF-ARW Models over East Indian Region

The thunderstorms are typical mesoscale systems dominated by intense convection. Mesoscale models are essential for the accurate prediction of such high-impact weather events. In the present study, an attempt has been made to compare the simulated results of three thunderstorm events using NMM and ARW model core of WRF system and validated the model results with observations. Both models perfor...
